JFrog Artifactory: Overview (2020+) (2024)

About this course

Course Duration: 25 minutes

In this DevOps course, we will introduce you to Artifactory and review some of the controls offered as well as supported services. Artifactory is JFrog’s binary repository used in automated builds, deployments and DevOps. Developers who work with OSS (open source) dependencies where the build process at time require to be stored or deployed in chunks use binary repositories to manage files, file integrity, or store a system of record. These tools are common in DevOps for management of continuous integration and continuous deployment (CI/CD) operations.

CI/CD is prevalent in DevOps environments, but many developers and operations professionals search for tools and solutions to improve the speed and reliability of their automation. The course focuses on training those new to DevOps or other IT professionals who have an interest in the way DevOps can streamline and speed up the software development lifecycle (SDLC). This course demonstrates Artifactory to organizations where CI/CD is already implemented, but where DevOps must be refined to support faster deployment and increased automation. This course also highlights automation in SDLC, data management, and data integrity.

We will provide an overview on Artifactory as a system of record as well as show options for automating tasks in Artifactory as part of your CI/CD development pipeline. We focus mainly on JFrog’s Artifactory DevOps tool, but students who want to better understand DevOps and binary repositories in general will improve their overall understanding of their environment.

This DevOps course content includes:

  • Learn Artifactory, binary repository management and its benefit in DevOps
  • Discover data management, system of record and the ways Artifactory benefits data integrity of information
  • Explore automation in the SDLC and the automation tools necessary to perform rapid development

Who should take this DevOps course?

This course is designed for new users learning Artifactory, Devops engineers and DevOps managers who would like to understand Artifactory and binary repositories in general. Artifactory is the first universal artifact repository. And it’s very versatile. The software supports several different build tools, dependency managers, CI servers, and operational tools, including all of the services shown here. Almost anything can be stored inside Artifactory. This includes any type of third party libraries, any artifacts you develop, build results, and any type of in-house plugins needed in order to execute those builds. Artifactory manages binaries for a variety of technologies, including .NET, Java, web development binaries like Java Script, and PHP. You can also use package managers like RPM, Debian, or Docker.

You could even stream live videos from the Artifactory server, illustrating the versatility of the product. Metadata is an important aspect of the binary repository storage. Artifactory can store various kinds of metadata. This includes metadata regarding the build environment, access permissions, licenses, digital signatures, and of course custom metadata, as well. Artifactory is a powerful tool that stores any type of binary along with the associated metadata.

It provides valuable controls for administrators, and a stable reliable source for build artifacts for developers.
